Enriched by centuries of commerce, the modern Oporto is simultaneously a cosmopolitan center and a city that finds its roots in the historical events of the past.
Magnificently located in the deep Douro River canyons, this granite town is best known for its bridges and the universally known Port Wine, whose wineries are an attraction for wine lovers from around the world.
Gastronomy
Several recipes for salted cod and other types of fish are very popular in the region, from which the Gomes de Sá cod stands out, almost as popular as the most typical Oporto dish, the Tripas, stew with cow guts, sausages and beans usually accompanied by rice.
Not to be missed, too, is the tasty Francesinha, another local specialty, consisting of a sandwich with steak, cheese, tomato, and sausage.
Accessible via the surface subway, the cities of Matosinhos and Leça da Palmeira, north of Oporto, offer several restaurants whose specialties are fresh fish dishes, especially swordfish, sole, hake, sea bass, and monkfish. - often prepared just leave the boats.
And once in Oporto, the wine list will be long, including nectars from all over the country - but especially from the Douro region, which is close by.
Must visit
Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, the Oporto district of Ribeira is a tangle of narrow winding streets punctuated by dark arcades.
The inner part of the city offers several important attractions, including the 12th-century Cathedral and the magnificent St. Francis Church with its gilt carved interiors.
Crossing the spectacular bridge of D. Luís I, with its two bridge decks, we arrive at Vila Nova de Gaia, the true homeland of Port wine, where tourists can take a guided tour in the cellars and drink a glass or two of this world-famous drink.
