Tips

Placed almost majestically on the right bank of the Tagus estuary, Lisbon is one of the most fascinating cities in Europe.
The great charm of the Portuguese capital lies in its strong ties to the past, with an abundance of restored palaces, majestic churches and a millenary castle set high in the highest hill of Lisbon, alive testimonies of the rich cultural heritage of Lisbon. Destroyed by the earthquake of 1755, the center of the city is almost all of the 18th century, except for the medieval Bairro Alto and Alfama, areas that border the so-called Baixa Pombalina.

Gastronomy
Eating in Lisbon is a rich blend of the generous portions of typical dishes served in the "Tascas", usually owned by the same family for several generations, and the modern and international style of newer restaurants, of which the Eleven, at the top of the Eduardo VII Park, is an example.

In the humblest of "Tascas" as in the most sophisticated of restaurants, cod is a must, whether it's à Brás, with onions and straw potatoes, in the oven or an infinity of other recipes.

The gastronomy of Lisbon is influenced not only by the sea but also by the proximity to the fertile plains of Alentejo. Further north, in the mountainous areas of Serra da Estrela, come other products that delight the diners. More and more chefs (and restaurants) in Lisbon work the typically Portuguese ingredients in inventive ways, giving the local cuisine a new and attractive "dressing".

Must visit
Many new attractions have appeared in Lisbon since Expo 98 World Exposition. Highlights include the largest Lisbon Oceanarium in the heart of Parque das Nações, in the eastern part of the city.
At the top of a hill, on the Baixa de Lisboa, stands the castle of S. Jorge, once a Moorish, later Christian and nowadays home to a fascinating museum. From this millenarian monument, the eyes of the visitors reach an amazing landscape, where the old one mixes with the modern and the man-made contrast with the natural landscapes.

Still in Baixa, a trip in the Elevador de Santa Justa, a beauty metallic work of art from the French engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard.
